I forgot I posted or even had this interview of Gary's where he talks about his drug abuse and actually says that Vietnam was part of the reason along with the decline in popularity of his music, that drove him into drug abuse. He hasn't always been truthful in regards to his Vietnam experiences in interviews, and glosses over that time. I feel like also in an interview Gary said that his dad was wrong and he didn't see action in Vietnam at all. That may have been the Howard Stern interview. Anyway here he agrees with what the interviewer says his father said, and I'm sure this was during a time where they were getting along again. Of course, the truth was Gary stole his parents possessions to sell drugs, held up a gas station (which got into the news), got busted for possession of drugs, and even was implicated with other men in the potential rape/assault of a woman in a car (according to an article). Not sure if he was guilty of the last one of course, but either way I've consistently held the belief that Frank Sinatra and friends helped make these charges go away somehow. Patti wrote in her book that Frank called and offered his assistance on some minor offense that I'm sure Patti wasn't telling the whole truth on what Gary had really been arrested for. Jerry claimed he had spent half a million throughout the years to get Gary out on bail for various arrests. Something to think about.

Jerry always maintained that it was Vietnam that drove Gary into drugs. In this interview, he seems to be sincere that that was the reason. I wonder if he remembers all of what he was accused and arrested for, or if that is blank.

Could be that drugs wore away his memory. I'm sure he doesn't want to remember those times. However him saying his dad overexaggerated the extent of the experiences and action that he saw, is peculiar. It made Jerry so upset for his son at the time that he threatened to leave the US before the army got another of his sons again. He thought about moving to Paris, and said so in a few interviews.
