Here is an article, not very positive, on M&L from the July-Sept. 1952 issue of the British journal Sight And Sound. The author was a very distant relative of mine, I'm almost ashamed to say.

My have times changed.... "Milton Shulman wrote in the Evening Standard that " they represent a deterioration in humorous taste not far removed from what might be expected if the printing press were suddenly abolished or if Attila the Hun reconquered Europe". Of Jerry Lewis' appearance and actions, he added: "in more enlightened times it would be considered impolite, almost indecent, to be amused by such ugliness, lunacy and deformity"."
